General information
Toprol is part of a class of drugs called beta blockers. Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation. It is used to treat angina (chest pain) related to coronary artery disease and hypertension (high blood pressure). It is also used to treat or prevent heart attack, migraine headache and certain types of tremors.
Directions
Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor. You should take it with a meal at the same time each day. You should not stop taking Toprol without first discussing it with your doctor. The maximum recommended daily dose of Toprol is 400 mg. Your doctor may increase or decrease your dosage as necessary.
Precautions
Tell your doctor about all medicines you may be taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, antacids, vitamins, and herbal supplements. If you are going to have surgery, let the surgeon know that you are taking Toprol. Drinking alcohol can increase certain side effects of Toprol.
Contraindications
Do not use this medication if you are allergic to it, if you have heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Possible side effect
The most common side effects included: tiredness, diarrhea, slow heart rate. Other common side effects: shortness of breath, dry mouth, hives, itching, nausea, chest pain, lightheadedness. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these side effects.
Drug interactions
Toprol can interact with: Alpha blockers (Alfuzosin, Doxazosin, Phentolamine, etc.), Calcium channel blockers (Verapamil, Nifedipine, Felodipine, etc.) which may cause a dangerously low blood pressure, antidepressants (Citalopram, Fluoxetine, Tranylcypromine, etc.), arrhythmia medications (Lidocaine, Disopyramide, Quinidine), Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): Ibuprofen, Meloxicam, Diclofenac. NSAIDs may decrease the blood pressure-lowering effects of Toprol.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure, hypoglycemia, abnormal heart rhythms.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Store it in a tight container.
